Ethnic tensions fueled by Laszlo Kover – the speaker of Hungarian parliament
Published: March 15th, 2011
Laszlo Kover called autonomy for Hungarian-inhabited areas "the future of the nation and God's command," during a visit to Targu-Mures / Romania on Saturday. He also stated during his visit at Targu Mures that the Hungarian state sustains the claims for autonomy of Hungarian ethnics in Romania and that such demands are “legal, fair and modern”.
Targu Mures was the only location in Romania where the Romanian and Hungarian ethnics had an open conflict in March 1990. The statements of Laszlo Kover are reviving the latent tensions existing in the area.
Mircea Geoana, speaker of Romania's parliament, said the remarks were "profoundly misplaced and unfriendly."
